Adding chat to your website
This guide puts an Appricity chat on your website in about ten minutes. You'll need access to edit your site's pages, or someone who has it.
Step 1: prepare a brand pack
Open Surfaces → Brand packs and check your default pack has your logo, colours and tone. If you need a different look for the website, create a pack for it. Colours that fail the readability check can't be saved, so fix any contrast warnings first.
Step 2: choose the role surface
The embed answers as a role surface. Generalist suits a public website; BDR suits a site focused on generating leads. Use the role surface's behaviour preview to try a few questions your visitors ask.
Step 3: create the embed
- Open Surfaces → Embeds and create a new one.
- Give it a name, choose the role surface and, optionally, the brand pack (your default is used otherwise).
- Under Allowed origins, list each address your site is served from, one per line, for example your main domain and its www version. Include the scheme (https).
- Under Behaviour, choose the position: bottom-right or bottom-left; the initial state: closed, open or minimised; and the trigger text on the button.
- Save.
Step 4: preview it
Choose Preview widget and ask a few real questions. Answers come from your knowledge and respect your refusal policy.
Step 5: paste the snippet
Choose Copy snippet and paste it into your site's pages, just before the closing body tag. With a site builder, use its "custom code" or "footer scripts" setting so it's on every page.
Step 6: check it on the live site
Open your site in a private browser window and start a chat. The conversation appears in Work → Conversations under the Website filter.
Step 7: set the limits
On the embed's page, review Requests per website per hour, Messages per visitor session and New conversations per day. Leave them empty to use the recommended values, or lower them.
Troubleshooting
- The chat doesn't appear: check the snippet is on the page, the embed is Active, and the page's address is in Allowed origins, including the right scheme.
- It worked, then stopped: someone may have chosen Regenerate slug, which retires the old snippet. Copy the new snippet onto your site.
- Answers are thin: add knowledge; the embed uses the same brain as everything else.
